However, there are those who are simply not paying attention to their dental health. Some people may think that dental health can be taken for granted since it has no association whatsoever with the vital organs of the body.

Little do some people know that dental health is as important as other vital parts of the body since it is the entry point of food and medicines. Our mouths take in good and bad altogether. Some people smoke, drink alcohol, eat too much unhealthy foods such as sweets and junk food, and take medicines with or without prescription.

Of course what comes into our mouths affects our entire bodies. But whatever it is, our mouth, teeth, tongue and gums are the first parts of our bodies that are affected.

It may be bizarre to some, but it is true that poor dental health, lack of dental hygiene and dental problems can all lead to heart problems. The bacteria in the teeth and gums can adversely affect the heart and can cause or put you at high risk for heart diseases and stroke. Other diseases may develop as well such as throat problems and halitosis.

A visit to the dentist can help lower these risks. There is just no reason why people fear the dentist. It is important to have your teeth and gums checked at least twice a year to ensure your dental health is on track.

Gum disease and dental health

Gum disease is manifested by the presence of gingivitis. It causes redness, swelling and bleeding of the gums and also bad breath. It may sound nasty, but gingivitis can be treated if diagnosed early.

Late stage of gum disease is called periodontitis. The gum lines recede and pull away from the teeth, causing the teeth to loosen or fall off.

A visit to the dentist is the first step to cure and prevent the worsening of gum disease.
